How to Be the CEO of Your Life (Even If You Never Want to Own a Business)
I had no intention of growing up to be a business person. I was not the kid with a lemonade stand. I did not dream about owning a company. But after experiencing financial trauma during my transition to college, I made a decision that changed everything: I switched to a Business major because I wanted to understand how money worked — and I figured a business degree would at least help me get a well-paying job after graduation.
What I did not expect was that the more I learned about business, the more I learned about myself. And now I genuinely believe that business acumen is one of the most important things any woman can develop — whether or not she ever plans to start a company.
That is what Episode 335 of She's So Lucky is all about. Listen to the full episode here:
Why Every Woman Needs Business Acumen in 2026
Whether you work in corporate, stay at home, run something on the side, or are still figuring out your next move — capitalism is going to touch your life whether you opt into it or not. The same way people say they do not do politics, and yet politics does them anyway, business works the same way.
The recent news about Hanifa is a perfect example. Founder Anifa Mvuemba announced an indefinite pause on production after nearly 15 years of building one of the most beloved Black women-owned fashion brands we have ever seen. Stories like Hanifa and Ami Cole are not cautionary tales. They are real examples of what happens when brilliance and creativity are not enough to overcome the very real barriers to infrastructure, funding, and institutional support. And they are exactly why understanding how business works — and where we all fit into that ecosystem — matters so much right now.
What It Actually Means to Be the CEO of Your Own Life
Being the CEO of your life has nothing to do with hustle culture or girl boss energy. It’s about making decisions with intention — the way a real executive does.
Most of us have been conditioned to wait. We wait to be chosen, wait for the raise, wait for someone to tell us we are ready. A CEO does not operate that way. A CEO assesses the information available, makes a decision, and moves. That shift in thinking is available to every single one of us, right now, regardless of job title or circumstance.
In this episode I break down exactly what that looks like in practice — including who you are hiring, firing, and demoting in your own life.
How to Identify Your Assets (And Stop Ignoring Them)
When I lost my voice the week of my first major keynote, I learned something I had never fully understood before: my voice is my number one asset. I literally cannot do my job without it. That experience is what pushed me to invest in vocal lessons — not as a luxury, but as a business decision.
An asset is anything that deserves to be protected, grown, and invested in. For some of us that is a skill. For others it is our reputation, our network, our health, or our presence. The question is not whether you have assets. The question is whether you are treating them like they matter.
Understanding Your Liabilities: What Is Draining You More Than It Builds You
A liability is not just a financial term. It is anything in your life that is costing you more than it is giving you. That can be a habit, a relationship, a belief, or a situation — yes, including a situationship.
Identifying your liabilities is not about shame. It is about making an honest assessment so that your assets have room to actually work. The CEO version of you does not let liabilities quietly drain the portfolio. She names them and decides what to do about them.
How to Start Making CEO Decisions in Your Everyday Life
You do not need a business to start making CEO-level decisions. You just need to get clear on three things: what you are building toward, what assets you have to work with, and what is currently getting in the way.
In this episode I walk through the full framework — and give you one concrete assignment to carry through the rest of March. If you are ready to stop waiting for permission and start running your life like you mean it, this episode is for you.
